Re: Laserscanned Nordschleife to be
Think it is a strong rumour, they are I think scanning the Nurburgring though. Asetto Corsa are meant to be scanning the Nordscliffe as well.
Announced 4 th August
iRacing.com today announced it will sponsor the Nurburgring 1000. Round 5 of the Blancpain Endurance Series, the “iRacing.com Nurburgring 1000”, is scheduled for the weekend of September 19-21. Motorsports fans attending the iRacing.com Nurburgring 1000 will have the opportunity to test iRacing throughout the race weekend at the SimRacingExpo 2014, which will be held in the exposition center adjacent to the circuit.
“The Blancpain Endurance Series brings the world’s top GT cars and teams to one of the world’s great race circuits for the Nurburgring 1000,” says Tony Gardner, president of iRacing.com. “More than 50,000 iRacers worldwide have the opportunity to race digital versions of some of the leading cars in the Blancpain Endurance Series, including the BMW Z4 GT3 and the McLaren MP4-12C. With such a large international fan base, we feel our association with this series, and the Nurburgring 1000 and Sim Racing Expo 2014 in particular, is a great way to introduce iRacing to even more racing fans from Europe and all around the world.”
“We’re pleased to have iRacing.com as sponsor of the Nurburgring 1000,” says CEO and Founder of SRO Motorsports Group Stephane Ratel. Marc Hennerici from the host promoter ADAC Mittelrhein adds: “iRacing.com, the Blancpain Endurance Series and the Nurburgring represent the epitome in their respective endeavors, and we look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with iRacing.”

From that article:
One thing to bear in mind is that no matter how much people say they want the Ring, it would hardly ever get raced.
There was a lot of speculation on the iR forums when this came out a couple of weeks ago and there hasn't been any confirmation or denial from any iRacing staff. I find it hard to believe that iRacing would get as far down the process as to scan a track and not announce it, especially for as big a deal as the Ring. They usually make a big announcement just when they get the licence. But given the lack of any denial it's possible that they are waiting to make a big announcement to coincide with the Nurburgring 1000 race. If nothing is announced that weekend then I would assume the scanning had nothing to do with iR.Sources inside the Nürburgring and also inside the games industry inform me that this 3D laser scanning might have been commissioned by Nürburgring themselves, with the aim of licensing an accurate "point cloud' of the track to any simulator or games developer interested.

Heh, I made the same comment yesterday over at ISIRik Walker wrote:One thing to bear in mind is that no matter how much people say they want the Ring, it would hardly ever get raced.

If its 'just' a scanned track and no considerable (and regular) MP races then i'm not too interested.
tracks get worked on all the time, or repaved, altered, etc. so a scan is just a moment in time and inaccurate as soon as things change again so not sure what the gain would be other then the 'idea' that its more realistic then manually modelled tracks.
And since I have no reference to begin with....
But if iracing Ring-ladders become populated in some shape or form i'm in

A properly scanned track that includes road surface details simply bears no comparison to manual tracks or even scanned ones which just use the scans to improve the placements of objects. That's why iRacing wins out for me, the tracks are just so alive compared to the polygon surfaces & canned bumps of rFactor, etc.Rouke wrote:If its 'just' a scanned track and no considerable (and regular) MP races then i'm not too interested.

Re: Laserscanned Nordschleife to be
How would you know, where's the comparisment? (and why does my auto correct say comparisment is incorrect?)
I'm not slacking it mind you, just trying to get my head around it, its a bit like porn, its mostly in the head anyways, you feel bumps and whatnot and in your head its like omg scanned this is so real, but at the same time (because no real life comparison) its still a bunch of bumps and whatnots?
or am i just missing the point here.
And yes, i would prefer scanned tracks al round but no, i would not be able to tell which one is which if they let me test 2 versions.

Re: Laserscanned Nordschleife to be
Here's your comparison: I drive some tracks (Zandvoort, Spa, Brands Hatch) both simulated and in real life. The iRacing ones are perfectly true to life, the rFactor ones aren't. I'm not talking about graphics but about the often almost invisible bumps, ridges and camber shifts in a track surface that make the car behave differently from what you expect. iRacing is a good training tool for driving a track, rFactor only teaches you the general lay out (left/right). That's what track modeling is about.
Whether that's important to simracing is another question, but you didn't ask.
BTW next weekend = Historical GP at Zandvoort!
Bye,
Leo

Hm good point Leo, never thought of that. even though I hardly would know how a car would properly react, knowing it does, or even remotely, surely is preferable.Leo wrote:...that make the car behave differently from what you expect.
