Lotus 79 SOF race Sunday

Post by MarkF »

I am sure Baz has mentioned this, I am racing with him or I should say a couple of laps behind him in the Lotus 79 season, we all are using period car schemes which makes it a bit more authentic.

Oh how I loved watching that video highlights of the Zolder race. I would so so love to be able to do that if only I could keep up even with the back markers. These are my sort of cars, wonderful looking racing and shows how iRacing still seems to take some beating as a great possibly greatest sim.

One question though I could not understand as it talked about Ferraris and Williams and Ligiers so how come as I thought this was all spec racing in Lotus 79's or is it just pretend Ferraris etc ?? Sorry for what may seem a dumb question but I am not only a senile old git but also so far out of touch even though my iRacign account is still active all the way until July when I have to decide what to do.

Well done Baz on the 8th place and well what can I say well done Mark for competing  Maybe I will fire up these Lotus 79s and with a default set up see how I can control it. Can you guys recommend a nice stable easy to drive setup to get me restarted. No promises but I do intend to try in a few test sessions.

Rouke, yes it does look pretty good, one reason I have a problem with Rfactor2 TBH, I know there is more to a racing sim than the eye candy, but well it goes a long way in the immersion stakes.

Ray, I really struggled taming the car again, even now I am struggling to get anywhere competitive, I am 4-5 secs off the fast guys and 3-4 secs off of Baz, but now I have the time to practice and compete i hope to narrow that gap by the end of this first season.

The current race and last race have not been kind in the weather, topping at 65 deg F so feeling as slippery as anything in a car that already Squirms all over the place, so it takes two laps for the car to feel anything like stable and even then..... so just be warned it is like driving on ice until you can start to anticipate the steering input.

Try this one attached, if the steering is way to twitchy try increasing it to 13 degrees, likewise the brake bias is set back you may need to move that forward.

Yes they are all lotus, but we use the car colours from the era so that is what he is referring to.

Okay I thought that would be the case with the colours but personally I think I would stick to it being a Lotus else it becomes unreal and just have different sim world team names as per the drivers choice like mine would be Gruntford as of old :)

Mark you do well mate for your age :moon: and a lot better than I could even with practice. If I could finish I would be at least 4 or 5 laps down and only way I would not be last is if others crashed out before I did. Now just about only 1.5 years from being bloody 70!!!! I do now realise why there are few 70 year old sim drivers in any of these leagues or championships as things do not work as smoothly and quickly as they used to. So the message is to all of us, bloody enjoy everyday as much as you can and sim racing for most of us here is a sheer pleasure so soak it all up while you can as nothing stays the same  That means support leagues like our very own Legends, which is still one of the very best and most organised in the world

Thanks a lot for the set-up Mark when I get a moment I will try it in Test mode on track at Spa (one of my favourite circuits). I DO wish iRacing would introduce AI cars so I could dumb them down and enjoy some competitive racing. At least rF2 does that and it is a great sim and I think looks great too I have to say. iRacing IS though still my favourite as it is just so professional and so easy to keep up to date with their frequent very welcome improvements.

If you love sim racing then to me even as a poor pensioner the annual iRacing subs and new cars and tracks costs are totally insignificant compared to the pleasure and quality of iRacing, IMHO that is of course. rF2 though is very much a close second I feel, but far messier to keep it updated and just not as easy to run up and drive as iR. But hey remember I am a poor judge as I race so little if at all these days. Absolutely though rF2 is the right sim for league racing right now though iRacing would be excellent if only folks would be willing to pay out the relatively little amount needed to run iRacing as it is really great value IMHO.

Spa with the inevitable lap 1 incident(s) good job you can run as many races as you like as long as they go official.

Great vid, thanks Mark. Pity we cannot have a Brit commentator but at least all credit for him trying and not too bad.

Well done Baz on 11th place, not at all shabby in what looked like pretty impressive competition there and a very big field too. Mark I noticed your absence mate, as was looking forward to you doing better than last race vid we saw.

My goodness how I am tempted to take some sim racing Viagra equivalent pills to correct my driving dysfunction and make me a big hard racer again :o :moon:

Well I hope you do but if I was still racign Bathurst woudl be one of the tracks I might miss as never has been one of my favourites, but Spa, well one of the very best.

Hope you headaches are not going to be a problem. You need to relax more as I find if I get stressed then I do get headaches too and migraines which are awful. So I try to relax as much as I can though been busy marketing these wonderful Geniatech Linux XBMC Media boxes.

Those Linux XBMC media boxes are very popular now especially with Expats over the World who not only want to watch latest movies in their often remote locations but also British TV which these boxes enable them to do :victorydance: Time the bloody BBC issued world wide BBC Internet TV licences for Expats at say about a fair set £25 -£30 a year (yes iut is a much reduced service than a full licensed service in the UK) with an encrypted internet streaming service (live and iPlayer) to all subscribers. It would make it then totally legal so literally millions of Brit Expats would not HAVE to break the law (or go without which is not an option for most) and AND raise the BBC much needed extra income as well as ITV added advertising revenue with a bigger worldwide potential audience. It is a no brainer and just typical British ill thought out dogma and stupidity the way they carry on as of course this is possible. So good we can combat their stupidity and not lose out :D Nice thing is the boxes we sell are totally legal themselves much like a PC is, it is just what folk want to put on them and run is where the legality issues comes into question, but 90% of folk just stick two fingers up to that because of the stupidity and no alternative choice !! Whoops thread drift as this should be in The Pub though justifyng the headaches I sometimes get hmm  :o

Had my best race so far yesterday finished 7th out of 19, lots dropped due to damage, thats the risk of pushing it, also promoted to Brands Hatch racing one of the F1 teams in the CTC championship.

I think the headache may have been a result of some beer the previous night, although it seemed like a stress headache, I think also now I have the rig built and the monitors at a fixed 27 inches from my eyes I will get some new reading glasses set up for that viewing distance. Things do a go a bit blurred when its quick, I have had to do lots of graphic tweaks keeping my FPS above 60, running Vsync on the Nvidia but still maintaining a good picture over three screens.

Good luck with the media boxes, certainly a market for them by the sounds of it.

Some teaser shots from Sundays race, video will be with us at weeks end i hope, surprise visit from Rob Swindells, unfortunately he got taken out on lap 1, Baz also after a ghost damage/collision, I survived to lap 18 where I lost it big time coming down the mountain having sustained some damage on lap 4 trying to get back under a car. Not bad a 33 car grid and Bathurst, shunt on lap 1 going down the mountain as unfortunately the lead car lost it on cold tyres causing a few behind to take damage.

Hi Chaps, good idea of Marks to start this thread, the attitude of most drivers in the CTC is very similar to Legends philosophy. We never tried the L79 when we tried iR, we nearly did but there were issues at the time with the car, it is much better now and we don,t have the new tyre model yet. I know Rick showed a few weeks ago and Fulvio competed last season. Any Legends will be made to feel more than welcome? Ray you can't use that I am to old excuse we have all age groups and abilities you would find someone to race.

A poll of L79 drivers ages:

Monday are good nights as we practice next weeks track with no damage to SR or iR non pass worded hosted server. The grids do look amazing with all the period paints.

Here is the Watkins video,

bugger if i can get it to show here, so below is link'
