Le Mans: No Wings and No Wandering

Post by Georg Naujoks »

Hi All,

just tried my first 2 laps without a front wing, i.e. removing the front
wing while driving into the pit wall at LeMans. Well, what should I say,
equaled my Q time from yesterday on my 1st flying lap and bettered my Q time
by almost a second on my 2nd flying lap, reaching 325 kph (317 with intact
front wing) !!!

But what most surprised me was the fact that the wandering was gone, there
was no wandering at all. I had full control over the car for the first time
after updating to GP79v2 ?!?!

Now is there something wrong with my equipment or with v2 ?

Petra, maybe you can try it too. Would be interesting if you experience the
same.

Drive your car nose first into a wall in the pit area, at 40 kph. With a bit
of luck only your front wing will come off. If not, try again. Your top
speed might now be as high 335 kph.

Bye,
Leo

Lotus 80 was an entire ground effect car, it doesn't need a front wing, as
the BT-48 or arrows A2. I removed the front wheel crashing into the pit wall
at every qualy try last night, because Lotus 79 was daed slow at the
straight. Anyway I used the front wing for the race.

NO FRONT WING on the 80Mk1
that was the message with posting an image of my car ;-)
you can not get rid of something that doesn`t exist, this car was a
full ground effect car as Damian already described

that`s a possibility, but I remember that I tried all cars when the
V2 mod came, the Tyrrell was definitely one of the cars I tried at
Monza and even the Williams was weaving, I tried the Ferrari T4 too
and the most popular ones, also the Ligier.
For Imola I could try different cars again on this occasion I can
learn the track too ;-)
OTOH what works at one track (look at the A1Ring and Kyalami) must
not work on other tracks! It`s also depending on how much rear wing I
use. The more and higher the rear wing is set the less weaving I
have, that`s what I found out too. I had no weaving at the A1 Ring
because of maximum rear wing setting: 10 and had less weaving at
Kyalami: rear wing 5 in the race
At Le Mans I had 2

Just a thought Georg, but could you try a little test. Raise your front ride
height by a centimetre and try that (don't knock your front wing off!). It
might be that you have been running on the bump stops which has made the car
effectively have no suspension at the front. When you knocked the front wing
off there would no longer be any downforce there to compress the suspension at
high speed.

Cheers,
Richard

Hi Rik,

tried it but that doesn't make any noticable difference. FWIW I have the
Motec data from a typical lap, if you want to have a look I can send it to
you.

Ah well, worth a try.

I don't really understand the suspension readings in the motec data and how
they relate to what the suspension is actually doing :(
