Le Mans - race report

Post by MarkF »

I was saddened to read of the incidents which marred some peoples race
experience here at Le Man, on the other hand of the three TWF1 races I
have run in this had to be the best so far, mainly because its the only
one I had no damage in ;-) also the Ferrari was quite fun.

A tough run at work meant no real time to practice, finishing work at
2000hrs and getting home really didn't put me in the frame of mind to
practice, also I never managed much more than an out lap without
crashing so frustration and tiredness crept in and I abandoned each
practice. It got to the stage where I was just not going to race and sit
at the back on the B server as an admin.

Race night arrived, I started out in practice purely with the intention
of actually just trying to string some laps together, I think by this
stage I had actually managed 6 or 7 timed laps all together. A 3:29.xxx
without really pushing things suddenly perked me up, so I dropped the 50
litres of fuel to 18 and stuck quali tyres on, wings at 1/1 hmmm 3:28.

Qualifying and I got a draft and pushed for a 3:26.9xx, wOOt that will
do me.

Good enough run for Fangio, put me 19th on the grid, great start by all,
I haven't checked the first lap but seemed clean, I managed a spin
having out braked myself and taking to the grass to avoid a collision.
that lost me a few places. After the first lap I was full of it, got
confidence and started hunting down cars, Mario was first, but he was
tussling with Petra down the straight and got hung out to dry, I nipped
up the left then to the right of Petra as Mario sucked into my draft,
but as I passed Petra all chaos broke loose behind as cars went
everywhere. Whoops, I thought, I hope that wasn't down to me, I didn't
feel anything.

Cracking on I closed on Leo who was battling Pedro, drafted past Leo and
then had him breathing down my neck on the bendy bits, but managed to
hold him off, as ever great close racing Leo. I was slightly quicker
through the last chicane and got on the power early enough to leave Leo
due to the low wings and sheer grunt of my engine. Next one down was
Pedro, who must have been running some wing as I was a good 7kph
quicker. Pedro cocked up on a corner, half lost and I grabbed the
opportunity and shot through, he followed but span out on the bendy bit.

Passed Rick on the straight, must have been damaged seemed to be limping
around, had Dave Pym ahead in sight but never able to close him down
especially with only two laps to go, settled for 7th at that point.

For me a great race, an exceptional one in that I could catch up and
overtake :-) thanks to all for the race and well done to Toni for the
win, about time I popped over to Oxford and had a word with your
lecturers about some more work ;-)

Nop Mark, I was running a very normal 1/3 wing

I was 5th by lap 6 when I looked to the fuel level and saw that it
wasn't enough for another 6 laps.

I couldn't use full throttle in the big straight lol
